HEATEN will supply HeatBooster HBL16, the biggest piston-based high-temperature industrial heat pump to the EU-funded HURRICANE project at ArcelorMittal Belgium’s Ghent site. The initiative aims to transform the plant into a sector-coupling circular hub by capturing surplus process heat and distributing it through a new district heating network, cutting energy, water, and raw material use while lowering greenhouse-gas emissions.
HEATEN’s technology will upgrade low- to medium-grade waste heat from steelmaking to the higher temperatures needed for heating nearby facilities. Integrated with the site’s utilities and HURRICANE’s optimization tools, the modular system will deliver efficient, continuous operation and serve as a model for similar projects across Europe.
“By upgrading waste heat into reliable, high-temperature heat supply, we’re proving decarbonization can go hand-in-hand with competitiveness. We’re proud to support HURRICANE’s vision at ArcelorMittal in Ghent and the surrounding community.” said Magnus Wagner, VP Project Management & Execution, HEATEN
“The HeatBooster HBL16 is the biggest piston-based high-temperature industrial heat pump — setting a new benchmark for industrial performance — delivering unmatched flexibility in the one- to two-digit megawatt range, a segment traditionally dominated by screw and turbo compressor.” said André Bechem, VP Sales & Product Management, HEATEN
“With Hurricane, we are building a circular hub where industrial residual heat is not lost but given a new purpose. This project demonstrates how cross-sector collaboration leads to more sustainable use of energy and resources, with ArcelorMittal Belgium at the heart of this transition. HEATEN’s technology is an important enabler for the heat grid.” – Frederik Van De Velde, CEO ArcelorMittal Belgium
The HURRICANE circular hub aims to extend the benefits of industrial efficiency to surrounding communities, demonstrating how innovative heat recovery strengthens environmental performance while boosting economic resilience in heavy industry.
